Quickly, observe what’s around you. Did you see shapes, colors, objects, or pictures? Visual elements and images are all around us. Visual elements (line, shape, color, texture, space, form) are a tool that artists, designers, markets, illustrators, and even YOU, use to communicate. There is no escaping visuals, which is why it’s important to learn how to read them and how to use them to strengthen your message or story.

Have you ever looked at a painting, poster, or advertisement and wondered, what it means? How did the artists or designer decide what to put on the page? Images are all around you, and it’s likely that you’re also making a lot of images (still and video) yourself, do you think about the messages that you’re communicating based on the visual elements that you use or don’t use? You should!

In this workshop, you’ll learn visual thinking strategies, that will help you to interpret the images around you. You’ll look at images and learn how to break them down, part by part, to get a better sense of what the image says, while also exploring the role that your personal context and aesthetic play in understanding what you see. Take your visual literacy skills to the next level.

FAQ:

Do I need to fill out an application to take this workshop: No, anyone is welcome is to join.

I signed up for the class-- when will I hear from you? If you received an e-mail receipt from AP Homeschoolers, you're registered! I'll invite you to access the class website approximately one week before the class begins, so mark your calendars.

Can I participate if I’m not homeschooled? You bet!

What if I miss part of the class? We understand that you have busy summer schedules! It's fine to miss part of the workshop-- you'll just need to catch up on what you missed later, and you may miss out on a bit of interaction with your classmates. It will be your responsibility to keep your instructor updated about your absence and to let your instructor know when you post late work. It's better to miss the end of a workshop than the beginning.

About the Instructor

Amber Kane has almost 15+ years of experience teaching visual arts. She has experience working as an artists, and illustrating children’s books. Amber is passionate about helping students to see the power of the visual arts as a form of problem solving, meaning making, and exploration. While Amber always finds teach, her day job is working as a Director of Product for an education company, where she leads teams to create K-12 Curriculum and Professional development products.

When she isn’t teaching or creating, Amber loves to spend time going on walks or hikes with her husband and their two dogs, Lobo and Kuma. They also have a cat, Velo, and while she loves to explore in the backyard, she is not a fan of walks.
