Quantum Mechanics for H.S. Students Reviews

Intriguing course!

Posted by Beata Smerznak on 07/01/2024 This course really gave me a good idea of the history behind QM as well as most of the ideas presented in it. From being someone who knew vaguely about the concepts to really feeling comfortable with all the different aspects of QM, this course really changed my perspective on the field. These concepts are at the forefront of science today and learning them will aide me as I go into college. As to work, this course was a refreshing class to be taking in the summer. Discussion questions and optional (tho highly recommended) readings took about an hour a week. I would recommend this class to others who want to know more about the ideas behind QM. It will be an eye opener! Beata, senior in high school

    Great QM course

This was a fantastic quantum mechanics course!  From my previous attempts to read about quantum physics online, most materials seem either written for kids and over-simplified so that they say little but some nonsensical variation on "cats can be both alive and dead" or "things can be in two places at once," or else they are intended for adults and contain lines and lines of esoteric math and terminology.  This class was like neither of these; instead, I appreciated how Dr. Kernion both explained all of the general ideas and concepts surrounding quantum mechanics and then zeroed in on the property of spin so we could do actual problems in QM with real math.  It was still quite difficult, I freely admit (much harder than Newtonian mechanics), but Dr. Kernion presented everything in a logical clear way with helpful outside resources, and by the end I felt I had a fairly good grasp on the ideas we went through in class.

This was a valuable summer class, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is fascinated by these topics or unsure about exactly what type of physics/engineering they are interested in studying (it's definitely helped me get a clearer focus on exactly what I want to major in in college).  Thank you so much Dr. Kernion for this amazing course!

      Great QM Course

Everything that we went over in this course was fascinating. From the history behind quantum mechanics, to some of the actual math behind it, as well as application, Dr. Kernion led us on many deep dives into the subject of QM. Although some (most) of what we went over was difficult to understand the first time around, I was able to effectively understand all of the key concepts after reviewing the class material, and my knowledge of QM is much greater now than it was before this course. I would definitely recommend this course for anyone who has taken calc and AP physics and is going into a field that could potentially deal with QM.

Non-Intimidating Deep Dive Into The World Of Quantum Mechanics

Quantum Mechanics with Dr. Kernion was a wonderful experience. This class is perfect for those interested in more complex quantum mechanics (beyond topics taught AP Chemistry or Physics). There is math-calculus and physics- involved for those who enjoy the equations behind the concepts but also doesn't completely overwhelm one with differential calculus. The class covered history of QM theory and its different interpretations too, which was fascinating and hilarious. I'm very satisfied in the course and feel very equipped to take on college-level QM. Great Introduction to QM Concepts

Posted by Jack Bolton on 07/03/2023

It's an amazing opportunity to learn QM concepts normally only taught in college courses in high school. The only homework was a discussion question after each class and some optional helpful resources, together taking about an hour after each class. The discussion questions were a great way to keep wrapping your head around the topics outside of class. I appreciate that Dr. Kernion focused not only on the science and theories themselves, but captured the scientific rivalries between those with different beliefs each trying to prove their theory correct. I recommend this class to anyone with a strong background in math and an interest in science.

            Terrific Course on Quantum Mechanics!

I highly suggest this course to basically anyone who has a background in math, and who likes to learn. Even if you were not interested in quantum mechanics before the class, you would be hard pressed to not get excited about the subject, both because of Dr. Kerion's compassion and the bizarreness of quantum mechanics. I think the most difficult part of the  lectures was just trying to hold all the new information in my head while applying it to new situations. Dr. Kernion recorded all of the lectures, though, so if I missed anything in class, I would just go back and re-watch that section of the recording. Quantum mechanics is such a tricky concept to learn (and even harder to teach, I'm sure) that I was worried the classes would be dumbed down to much. This was definitely not the case. Even after taking calculus and AP Physics C, this class was difficult, but the reward of everything clicking at the end easily made it worth the challenge.

              Great Quantum Mechanics Summer Course

Although I have researched and read about basic QM principles before to satisfy my curiosity, this course has significantly improved my knowledge in this area. It has not only helped me to establish a solid foundation for my future studies in QM but has also enabled me to delve further into this fascinating subject. Another thing I appreciated about this course is that it has allowed me to go to the next level of learning by utilizing the additional resources and appendices that Dr. Kernion provides. As for the content of this course, everything from matrix and wave mechanics to the various interpretations of QM is covered and explained very thoroughly. Some of the concepts can be challenging, but with a good background in math and physics, I think this course is certainly a great introduction to the complexities of QM. Additionally, Dr. Kernion records each lecture, so one can revisit difficult concepts during the course to ensure comprehension. In short, I would highly recommend this course to any high school student who is interested in learning more about QM.
