AP Precalculus by Ms. Chan
Posted by Joshua Saggurthi on 07/19/2024Great class!
Posted by Dominic Witchalls on 07/17/2024This is a great class for anyone wanting to take AP Precalculus. There's one class every week which is very hands on and intereactive. During the week there's a lot of independent studying so you'll need to be good at that and managing your time. I was doing around 2 hours a day of work which is more than indicated but thats probably due to being slightly behind this level of maths before beginning this course. Ms. Chan is a very good teacher and responds quickly to any questions.
Excellent PreCalculus course
Posted by Benjamin Leman on 07/17/2024This was an excellent course! Mrs. Chan does a great job prepping students for the AP PreCalculus exam, and she even covered some Precalculus topics the AP exam doesn’t test on (but are still important to know for when you take Calculus). In addition, Mrs. Chan was very helpful in responding to any questions I had about the course or topics we covered in the course. Also, she had great TAs who answered any problem-specific questions I had. It is a challenging and time-consuming course, and you have to work hard to get a good grade, but that can be said of any advanced math course. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in taking Precalculus.
Rigorous AP Prep
Posted by Nathanael Yacono on 05/18/2024Ms. Chan is a kind teacher who wants to help her students. She responds very quickly to emails. I feel prepared for calculus thanks to her class. If you are good at math and willing to learn challenging material, this class is a good fit for you! She covers the material at a fast pace in order to leave a full month for AP prep. While I found some of the tests challenging and didn't always feel prepared for those, I discovered that I scored quite well on the AP practice exams. I would advise taking advantage of any extra credit opportunities since the class is so rigorous. The live class ends around spring break, so there is more time for studying for the AP.
Honors Precalculus
Posted by Benjamin Loh on 08/23/2023I took Honors Precalculus with Ms. Chan in my sophomore year and learned a lot from the class. Ms. Chan is very approachable and responds to students’ emails/questions. I like that there is a live session every week where students can ask questions. If there are no questions, Ms. Chan will give practice problems for students to solve. There were many times when I had difficulties on certain concepts and she explained them all to me in an easy to understand way. I learned more from her lectures than from the textbook. The homework is not too much, but challenging enough to help me learn the material well. This year, I am signed up to take AP Calculus with her again. I highly recommend Ms. Chan’s classes.
Excellent Precalculus Class!
Posted by Ezra Kusnadi on 07/05/2023Ms. Chan really knows how to explain confusing and complicated concepts in easy and simple terms, helping me understand new mathematical laws and trigonometry concepts. There is a good amount of problems and homework per week that you won't feel too relaxed but also don't feel overwhelmed. Every week we have a quiz that reviews everything we learned and helps to solidify everything. If you are looking to get started in precalc and want to learn the basics plus other concepts, I would highly recommend!
Good class, some tech issues
Posted by James Leman on 07/05/2023This class will teach you what you need to know about precalculus. In general, due dates and everything are fairly straightforward. The only issue I would warn about is that there is a lot of technology involved in the course, involving multiple websites, and the one called "Pearson" is sometimes difficult to figure out, but it's not an insurmountable problem. Just make sure you understand the website well before you take any tests on it.
An enjoyable and excellent experience (Honors Pre-Calculus)
Posted by Nicholas B. on 06/16/2022 4Hello! I would most definitely recommend this class to any student with a disciplined work ethic, a desire to gain the basis for calculus-level mathematics, and a genuine desire to learn! Generally, I would say that I put in a max of ~30 minutes per day, but I suspect that it might vary between students. I found myself searching out information about topics outside of class for the sake of pure interest. Ms. Chan clearly wanted us to succeed and was happy to help me with any queries that I had (responding in a timely manner, to boot). She clearly has a feel for distance learning and gauged the class towards a diversity of student comfort levels and abilities. Not once did I feel left behind, but my one piece of advice to students considering this class is this; manage your time wisely! If you shrug the work off until the last minute, the quality of said work will diminish (I say this from experience). I am excited to help you all as a TA this coming semester and am duly excited to be taking Ms. Chan's AP Calculus class as well. Cheers!
100% recommend taking this class!
Posted by Kendall Calhoun on 04/17/2022I cannot rave enough about how wonderful Ms. Chan is. She is a patient, brilliant teacher who wants nothing but for all of her students to walk away with a solid foundation of math.
How many hours of work per day or per week did you generally put into the course?
I worked about 1 hour a day in this Pre-Calculus course. Sometimes it would be a little more or less depending on the specific weekly assignments. While this course has challenging topics, the work load is very doable if you put in effort!
Are there any particularly favorite assignments that you found especially valuable?
I did not have a favorite assignment because all of the assignments Ms. Chan assigned were SO valuable. She does not just give busy work. Each assignment has a purpose that will prepare you for the chapter test, final exam, and AP Calculus!
Did the course enhance your interest in the subject?
This course 100% enhanced my interest in Mathematics. I am now planning on majoring in Mathematics in college because I have such a sound understanding of how numbers work.
Did you find your communications with other students to be interesting or valuable?
I personally did not communicate with many students, but this was due to my extremely busy schedule. However, there are MANY opportunities to connect with classmates. If you are a person who wants to have friends to learn with, I suggest reaching out on discussion boards!
What sort of student would do well in this course? Would you recommend this course to other students (if they are willing to work hard!)?
Diligent and determined students would succeed in this course, no doubt. I recommend this course to any student who is willing to put in effort. I have been with Ms. Chan for two years now and every second has been valuable. You will not go wrong taking this course, or any of her other courses!
