Course description: This course is designed to help students develop their language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking and will develop their proficiency in the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational. The course is designed around the following six themes:
- Families in Different Societies
- The Influence of Language and Culture on Identity
- Influences of Beauty and Art
- How Science and Technology Affect Our Lives
- Factors that Impact the Quality of Life
- Environmental, Political, and Societal Changes
The goal of this course is that students would not only have success on the AP® Spanish Language & Culture exam, but that through their preparation, students would develop a deep appreciation and understanding of other cultures, and that they would be able to engage creatively in the target language.
To develop their language skills, students will study grammar and vocabulary with a focus on communicative competence, while interacting with a rich variety of everyday materials from different Spanish-speaking countries and cultures, such as advertisements, articles and news clips on current events, target language websites, videos, etc.
A typical week’s worth of assignments may include two to three reading samples (of a couple pages each), one audio listening sample, several multiple choice exercises, fill-in-the blank exercises, brief writing exercises, and one or two essays and/or recorded oral presentations. Students will interact with one another and with the instructor by way of forum discussions, presentations, and live class sessions. (Live class sessions will be held once a week. Attendance is strongly encouraged, but not required.) Students should plan to invest 5-7 hours a week in this course.
Tuition: $800 if enrolled after June 30. $775 early bird price if tuition is paid by June 30. Cost of required text is additional.
Dates: This course will meet live most weeks on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time. (Attendance is encouraged, but not required.) Class will begin September 3 and will end after the AP® exam in May. We will take a one-week break for Thanksgiving, two weeks at Christmas, and a week of break in February and over Holy Week.
Instructor qualifications: This will be my first year teaching for PA Homeschoolers, and I am very excited. I have a B.A in Spanish Education from Cedarville University and earned a Masters of Education through Cedarville with a concentration in Spanish through SUNY Geneseo. I studied and lived in Sevilla, Spain for about a year during my college years and made some of my closest friends there! I taught Spanish for eleven years in a local public school at a variety of levels, including two intermediate college level courses, as well as launched the first seal of biliteracy program for the district. I have since decided to step back from full-time teaching and begin my own homeschooling journey with my two sons (a first grader and a four year old). I have transitioned into some different Spanish teacher roles part time. I spent a year teaching an elementary Spanish course for dual enrollment for a local homeschool class that partners with Roberts Wesleyan University, and I also contract with different publishing companies, writing and creating Spanish content for teachers nationwide.
I love to travel, cook, read, drink delicious coffee, and spend time with my husband and two little boys! We have a goldendoodle named Andalucía (Luci), and currently live in Western New York.
